Leader as Member: Using T-Group to Develop Referent Leadership Skills for a Changing World

Leadership in organizations has gone through a transformation from hierarchical leadership to more personal forms of leadership. Key to managing from a referent position is knowing oneself and one's emotions, navigating others' emotions, connecting across difference, and giving and receiving feedback effectively. From this perspective, leading means being more personally known to others than is typical in work settings. This workshop will present key concepts and techniques from the Interpersonal Dynamics course taught to MBA students at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business. There will be an experiential segment of the workshop where the model can be practiced and power of leader as member will be demonstrated.

Learning Objectives

The participant will be able to:
1. Identify group approaches relevant to business vs. psychotherapy
2. Compare interpersonal dynamics with intrapersonal dynamics
3. Experience exercises that aid interpersonal dynamics for business and organizational leadership.

This event offers participants an opportunity to learn through their own experience in a group. This type of work is experiential and may feel emotionally intense at times, which can be both exciting and thought-provoking.
