About the Institute
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a timeless book and movie that offers rich metaphors, interesting characters and an adventurous narrative which offers insights applicable to therapy. This workshop will illustrate similarities between the Oz narrative and the experience of group therapy.
About the Speaker
John Jay Martinez, LCSW-BACS, LAC is a private practice Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Addictions Counselor who provides individual, group and family therapy in Baton Rouge, LA. He has worked in the mental health and substance abuse field since 1987. He has been in private practice since 2004.

Objectives
- Become familiar with the main characters from the Wizard of Oz and how they are similar to group members and group leaders.
- Identify similarities between the Oz narrative and Yalom’s “therapeutic factors”.
- Practice specific breathing and centering exercises which help group members stay in the here and now of present group experience.
- Experience grounding techniques of stillness, connecting to self and connecting to others in the group therapy setting.
