Virtual PAGPS Spring Workshop April 22, 2023 8:30AM – 12:30PM Eastern Time
Roll for Wellness 101: Using Role-Playing Games across Group Therapy Settings
3.75 CE credits for Psychologists, Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists, & Professional Counselors
Presented by Jacob Glickman, PsyD, MA, LPC
Tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) have emerged as one of the most exciting, new formats for group therapy; however, many clinicians question how to actually implement TTRPGs as part of their practice. In this four hour workshop, Dr. Jacob Glickman (creator of the game Roll for Wellness) will highlight the ways that group therapists can take their clinical knowledge and apply it to the world of role-playing, as well as share about the therapeutic potential that such games can offer clients in all settings. This half didactic/half experiential event is intended for all levels of experience with TTRPGs! Handouts will be sent to registrants in advance of the workshop. At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Analyze the historical and cultural foundations of tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) to contextualize current academic/therapeutic interest in them. 2. Compare the structure and process of TTRPGs with that of group therapy to demonstrate the potential of TTRPGs as a treatment modality. 3. Translate between common terminology of TTRPGs and their counterparts within clinical theory. 4. Apply existing clinical skills to the new modality of therapeutic TTRPGs as preparation for using TTRPGs in treatment contexts. 5. Demonstrate the ability to read and fill out a character sheet, the fundamental tool in the therapeutic TTRPG process. 6. Assess how TTRPGs can enhance clinical practice as either a part of treatment or the primary treatment modality. “Something there is that doesn’t love a wall” Robert Frost
In any group, from families to political groups to spiritual communities, ruptures inevitably occur, causing distress and disruption. This is certainly true of therapy groups. During the course of this Institute, participants will learn how to recognize and address ruptures and facilitating repair. An underlying element of almost all group therapy ruptures are the Enduring Relational Themes that are evoked in the current interaction. Working with repair provides the group therapist an opportunity to explore these Enduring Relational Themes.
Through the use of both didactic and experiential learning, you will learn to:
Identity both subtle and overt ruptures in the group
Slow down the group process
Support all the “voices of the field”
Recognize the Repetitive and Healing Dimensions of group experience
Explore enduring rela8onal themes evoked with the rupture
Work with the group therapist’s own feelings and countertransference to help facilitate repair
Enacting Racial Justice Through the Exploration of Diversity, Bias, and Our Lived Narratives
Thursday, April 27, 2023 | 6:00-9:00 pm 3 Ethics CE credits available
Bias “I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable.” “My clients are not paying to hear my opinions/my concerns.” “You’re just not supposed to talk about race.”
We are often so much more acquainted with the reasons not to talk about race, that we are not as well-versed in the life-affirming reasons that we need to be naming it. It is often personally uncomfortable or objectionable in some way which leads many to not bring race into their professional realm. This includes mental health professionals. Race discussions in the therapy room are often relegated to a demographics question on intake paperwork or selectively spoken to if we make some assumption that race might be an issue for a particular client. What is often not considered is the fact that our ethics codes governing our practice require our active inquiry, advocacy, and responsibility around racial issues. Come ready for an educational process around race, but much more, come expectant for space to deeply explore our own narratives around race and how they create opportunities and/or barriers to deepening our clinical, and personal, engagement with racial justice.
If cost is a barrier to participation, please contact Ramsha Momin at ramsha.sw@gmail.com.

"Connecting, Disconnecting & Reconnecting in Groups,
Online & In Person"
The last few years have challenged group therapists to provide ongoing connections in new and innovative ways as many restrictions impinged upon meeting in person. We adapted and expanded our ways of connecting with each other through a screen that allowed for our voices to be heard and shared, our personal space to be exposed. We learned how ‘clouds’ of internet space made it possible for people from different geographical distances to come together. We are now courageously learning to integrate online and in person groups as ongoing modalities for providing group therapy.
This year, NSGP is offering a two-part Mini Conference to connect with group therapists, new, or experienced, near or far, to learn together and from each other through 2 all-day Experiential Groups.
Farooq Mohyuddin, MD, will be leading the January General Experiential Group for mixed years of experience.
Farooq is past president of MAGPS, past president of WPS, Chair of Psychiatry Training and Director of Psychiatry Residency Training Program at Saint Elizabeth's Hospital/DC Department of Behavioral Health. He is the recipient of the 2021 Harold S. Bernard Award for Group Psychotherapy Training by the International Board of Certification for Group Psychotherapists and the 2021 Award for Exceptional Leadership by the Washington Psychiatric Society.
Julie Anderson, PhD, CGP, will be leading a Special Interest Group, entitled “Moving between Two Dimensions and Three: How we experience our shifting dimensionality as we lead groups on Zoom and in person” in January on Zoom and in April in person. You must register for both sessions.
Julie is a clinical psychologist practicing in Brookline, MA. She has been involved in group psychotherapy for over 20 years, and currently sees patients and supervisees in both virtual and in-person formats. She has co-led an Observation Group at Brookline Community Mental Health for over 10 years, and has offered workshops and Experience Groups at the annual meetings of AGPA, NSGP and International Association for Group Psychotherapy annual conferences. She has been involved with the NSGP Conference Committee in many roles; currently she co-chairs NSGP’s newly-formed Program Committee.
Alexandra (Sasha) Watkins, LMHC and Anaïs Lugo-Guercio, OT will be co-leading the April Special Interest Group titled "Talking across differences: An Identity Based Approach to Groups" that will be held in person in the Boston area on April 29, 2023.
Sasha serves as a co-chair of the NSGP Diversity & Inclusion Committee. She is an Associate Director of MBA Student & Academic Services at Harvard Business School. She teaches Group Dynamics at Lesley University and has a private practice in Cambridge MA. She has worked in college counseling and human services and has extensive experience working with diverse client populations, including veterans, individuals with severe psychiatric disabilities, neurodiverse adults, students, and cultural minorities. Her clinical interest is identity-based approaches to therapy.
Anaïs received her master’s in occupational therapy from Tufts University. She has experience working in schools, with children from kindergarten to high school, and leading psycho-educational groups in the in-patient mental health setting. Anaïs is a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion group leader, leading groups focused on identity, healing, and social justice. She is a member of NSGP’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. Her areas of interest include inclusive virtual communities.
