MAGPS - Spring 2023 Conference

AND THEN I FROZE:
Processing Cultural Enactments Using Mindful Facilitation

APRIL 1st and 2nd

May 6th and 7th!

PRESENTED BY:
DONNA J. HARRIS, MA, LCSW, CGP

This conference is designed to bridge the gap between cultural awareness and cross-cultural dialogue.

While clinicians are aware that they need to address issues of difference and microaggressions in their practice, all too often these enactments create unresolved ruptures because we freeze when faced with unintended or even, deliberate slights.

This conference will present didactic and experiential material grounded in principles of cultural humility, trauma-informed practice, and Mindful Facilitation to help participants gain an understanding of barriers in engaging others in difficult conversations about race and racism. Participants will also learn to effectively lead challenging discussions about Social Location and members' experiences with oppression.

Click here to view our Conference webpage and get more information.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Participants in this conference will:

  1. Differentiate between cultural competency and cultural humility.
  2. Discuss how cultural enactments manifest in groups
  3. Name at least two different types of microaggressions.
  4. Demonstrate Culturally Responsive Listening skills.
  5. Practice Mindful Reflections in dyads and small groups.
  6. Identify at least 3 Mindful Inquiries to use with individuals.
  7. Apply Mindful Facilitation skills to small groups.

Dance Lesson: Using Dance to Lead Intersectionality and Anti-Ableism in our Groups

Group is an intricate dance between members and facilitators, identities and experiences, and the here-and-now. Intersectionality is a complex tango between discrimination, marginalization and social inequities. In this interactive event, attendees will experience the performance of ZCO/DANCEPROJECT which was founded and artistically directed by Zazel-Chavah O’Garra, MSW. Zazel, a brain tumor survivor, created this physically integrated dance company to encourage the integration and inclusion of people with disabilities in dance and in society. Relatedly, attendees will explore concepts of ableism and intersectionality, engage their embodied experience, and in experiential components explore how to choreograph their and members' steps toward including all aspects of members' identities, including ability status, in group.
