EGPS Work Group for Racial Equity Discussion Group
Monday, March 15th, 2021
8:30pm - 9:45pm

For our March discussion group, we will be reading and discussing award winning author, Isabel Wilkerson's book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. What do Nazi Germany, the United States and India have in common?

Isabel Wilkerson examines the society of Nazi Germany, the social order of the United States and the explicitly named caste system in India finding striking similarities. From the ways they are self-perpetuating, to the irrational beliefs that work to suppress any stirrings of discomfort or dissonance in the dominant castes.

How does looking at the United States and its interlocking systems of oppression as a system of caste shed new light on white privilege, racism and anti-blackness?

How can we use an understanding of the US as a system of caste as a tool in dismantling systemic racism and the multitude of hierarchies and intersecting oppressions in the United States?

Isabel Wilkerson, a brilliant wordsmith, also plays with the homonym "cast" throughout the book. As you read, pay attention to her strategic use of multiple meanings of the word.

Please join us as we come together to share and develop our insights, takeaways, and new ideas for action steps. We invite you into this brave space of deep listening and sharing. Building a community of solidarity in the exchange of emotional risk- taking and vulnerability.

The event is free, but you need to register in order to attend:

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
